HORIZONS. Impressions from the Island

After its debut in Oristano, the HORIZONS exhibition becomes a traveling project and lands in the spaces of MAB – Contemporary Art and Culture Center in Bari Sardo, a young and vibrant venue directed by Nicoletta Zonchello. The exhibition arrives with a renewed format and a new subtitle: “Impressions from the Island.”

The opening will take place on Saturday, May 10 at 12:00 PM, in the presence of the curators and some of the featured artists.

Curated by Marta Cincotti and Simone Mereu, and organized by the Auravisiva association with the support of the Fondazione di Sardegna and Gattermayer srl – Impianti e Costruzioni, this new edition of the exhibition places a particular focus on photography. It offers a visual and poetic narration of Sardinia, exploring horizons that are geographical, symbolic, introspective, and deeply personal.

Surrounded by the sea, both protected and confined by that fluid and infinite boundary, we islanders live with an unconscious obsession with the horizon. A marine horizon so vast that it becomes part of who we are—even when we move away from it. It shapes us, inspires us, teaches us, and binds us.
“That imaginary line between sea and sky tells the story of who we are—our tendencies, ambitions, and limitations,” write the curators. “It tells the story of our island—the land that hosts us, supports us, and defines the borders around us. That’s why, when we began to reflect on an exhibition about landscape, the horizon quickly became the focal point of our exploration.”

This gave rise to “Horizons. Tales and Visions from the Island,” an art and photography exhibition first presented at the Diocesan Museum of Oristano. From that, a new chapter emerged: “Impressions from the Island,” a photographic exhibition now hosted in the beautiful setting of MAB in Bari Sardo.

The exhibition features works by thirteen photographers (Francesca Ardau, Marianna Bernardini, Sandro Cabras, Ettore Cavalli, Andrea Cocco, Elisabeth Euvrard, Enrico Marras, Roberta Montali, Barbara Pau, Antonio Pintus, Monica Porcu, Alessandra Scoppetta, Alessandro Toscano) and one designer (Sara Vignoli), who together create a narrative of geographical, symbolic, metaphorical, and emotional horizons. All the works share a common thread: Sardinia as the subject, filtered through the unique perspectives of those who live there.

Through photography in particular, the exhibition takes us on a journey across an island that resists definition—a place marked by a visceral, at times painful, relationship with its territory. In the encounter between rock and sea, between wind and the silences of the mountains, stories emerge that reflect not only the geography of the land, but also the inner lives of its inhabitants and those who hold its memories.

The exhibition does not provide answers but instead offers glimpses of emotional connection—sometimes unconscious—that we may all experience when faced with the same landscape. Impressions from the Island becomes a collective, visual, and poetic narrative that travels across Sardinia through the eyes of those who live it and observe it.
